CTO Islamabad hints crackdown against overcharging transporters

ISLAMABAD: Newly appointed Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Islamabad, Muhammad Sarfraz Virk, on Tuesday reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing strict legal action against transporters overcharging passengers, vowing zero tolerance for fare violations.

While chairing his first important meeting since assuming charge as CTO, Mr. Virk stated that facilitating citizens is among his top priorities.

According to the spokesperson, representatives of the transport association, SP Traffic Majid Iqbal, SP Saddar Zone Kazim Naqvi, SP CTD Khalid Mehmood Awan, and other traffic police officers attended the meeting, held at the Safe City office.

During the meeting, the CTO issued clear directives that no one would be allowed to charge excessive fares from passengers under any circumstances, and strict legal action would be taken against violators.

On the occasion, representatives of the Transport Association were directed to promptly inform the police about passenger movement and any unusual transportation-related situations to ensure public convenience and security.

The CTO further stated that providing quality and dignified travel facilities to citizens is a top priority of Islamabad Police and no negligence or violation of the law will be tolerated in this regard.

All participants expressed their commitment to working together to provide better travel facilities to citizens and to improve the traffic system, making Islamabad’s transport system more efficient and organized.

Since Mr. Virk was assigned traffic duties last week, it has been widely anticipated that he will effectively address traffic-related issues, as he has been appointed to this key post for the second time. He replaces Captain (r) Hamza Humayun, who vacated the position to attend a mid-career management course.

Having previously served in the Traffic Division, he was posted as SSP in the Security Division in February 2025. His return as CTO on March 28, 2026, reflects a strategic reshuffle of experienced leadership.

His reappointment draws on his extensive experience within the capital’s traffic and security framework. In addition to his tenure as SSP Traffic, he has also served as Superintendent of Police in the traffic department, equipping him with in-depth insight into the city’s operational and safety challenges.

Islamabad Police anticipate that his familiarity with traffic dynamics will facilitate a smooth transition and strengthen the focus on road safety and public service.
