ITP’s drive leads to major decline in road accidents

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Traffic Police’s (ITP) ongoing campaign against lane violations by motorcyclists led to a significant reduction in road accidents, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Islamabad Hamza Humayun said.

The ITP issued a statement, which shows a significant decline in road accidents.  This turn down, claimed by ITP, was due to an important campaign, against lane and other traffic rules violations, is being carried out by the traffic authorities from last few months.

The 17 fatal accidents and 14 injury-related accidents were reported in January 2025 while December 2025 witnessed 10 fatal accidents and 14 accidents resulting in injuries, said CTO Mr Humayun

However, he said only five accidents were reported in January 2026 indicating a positive impact of the enforcement drive.

“The statistics reflect a significant decline in road mishaps following strict enforcement of helmet use and lane discipline,” recalled CTO, adding that the encouraging results achieved due to all out efforts of the ITP’s officials and field staff.

He further explained that the ITP has launched targeted campaign against helmet non-compliance and lane violations, the number of accidents dropped considerably.

The CTO emphasized that traffic police officers and personnel remain deployed on roads round the clock to ensure the safety of citizens. He urged the public to strictly follow traffic rules, particularly lane discipline, to help reduce accidents and save lives.

Motorcyclists were specifically advised to remain in the left lane and maintain a slow and safe speed. “Lane violations not only endanger the rider’s life but also put other road users at risk,” he warned.

As per exclusive statistics available with Daily Times, the violations graph was very high in first month of last year as compare to January 2026. The data reveals that the ITP has taken strict legal action against more than 88,000 drivers and 187 cases were registered for serious violations January 2025.

Over 18,000 vehicles had been impounded at various motorcades and police stations.

According to him, the campaign also focused on public awareness through on-ground briefings, distribution of safety pamphlets, and direct engagement with motorcyclists at major intersections.

Traffic wardens educated riders about the importance of wearing helmets, maintaining lane discipline, and avoiding over-speeding.

He highlighted that the ITP believes a combination of strict enforcement and awareness has played a key role in changing road-user behavior.

Senior officers regularly monitored the drive and reviewed performance reports to ensure transparency and effectiveness. The traffic police reiterated that enforcement will continue without discrimination, warning that violators will face strict legal action to ensure safer roads across the federal capital.
