ISLAMABAD: Rapid increase in population poses challenges to Pakistan’s national development and puts pressure on the country’s resources, said Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, Coordinator to Prime Minister on Health.
The Ministry of National Health Services is organizing a seminar in Islamabad on July 11 as part of the observance of World Population Day. The objective of observing this day is to create awareness among the public and find sustainable solutions to guide towards a stable future, said Dr. Mukhtar, adding that Pakistan ranks fifth among the most populous countries in the world.
Dr Mukhtar said according to the 2023 census, Pakistan’s population stands at 241 million, while the current population is increasing at a rate of 2.55%. He also stated the possibility of Pakistan’s population reaching 263 million by 2030 and 383 million by 2050 due to the high population growth rate. Implementing effective family planning measures is crucial for stabilizing the population growth in the country, he emphasized.
The coordinator to PM said the formation of federal and provincial task forces reflects the government’s strong commitment to controlling the population growth.
The central theme of this year’s World Population Day is embracing the power of comprehensive data in ensuring a resilient and equitable future for all. The seminar will be attended by federal and provincial ministers, stakeholders, media representatives, and special guests, as per Ministry of Health spokesperson. Coordinator to PM on Health Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath will be the chief guest of the seminar while federal health secretary will deliver key speeches at the seminar. UNFPA representatives, high commissioners/ambassadors from various embassies, and population brand ambassadors will also address the seminar. Expert panel discussions focusing on population issues and maintaining balance within families will be held during the seminar, as per the Ministry of Health spokesperson.
