ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (ABC):The federal government has digitized around 4 million historical records under a comprehensive modernization programme of the National Archives of Pakistan (NAP).
According to documents available with Wealth Pakistan, the initiative is being carried out under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) project titled “Strengthening & Modernizing National Archives of Pakistan.”
Besides the document digitization, the project has also restored 50,000 historical records to ensure their long-term protection.
The digitization of 2.7 million pages of rare books, manuscripts, newspapers, and other valuable documents has already been completed, marking significant progress in the country’s transition towards digital preservation of historical records.
To further strengthen the initiative, the government is establishing a dedicated IT Wing in the National Archives. Photographs, microfilm rolls, audio and video recordings, and other archival holdings have already been digitized.
The modernization programme will enhance e-governance by making archival records more accessible to researchers, policymakers and the public, while also protecting irreplaceable historical documents from physical deterioration and natural disasters.
The ongoing modernization drive reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s documentary legacy through the adoption of modern technology, improved archival management, and enhanced public access to historically significant records.
